FAQs
YES! As a student, you’ve seen how hard physical therapy professionals work throughout their careers. While caring for patients is rewarding work, you can endure long hours, staffing shortages, and burnout. No matter the reason, sometimes mistakes happen, and patients can get hurt or perceive negligence and file a malpractice lawsuit. An effective, affordable way to help protect your career is with your own policy.

Your license can also be at risk if a board complaint is filed against you. Anyone can file a complaint against you for a variety of reasons; an injury is not required. A license complaint is a serious matter. It may involve an investigation by the state board and a formal hearing. A malpractice policy through HPSO includes $30,000 of Licensure Defense Expenses coverage that you can put towards an attorney, and HPSO will help you find one. Having legal counsel at your side will help reduce stress and increase the odds of a positive outcome.
Your employer’s policy is focused on your employer. The policy has the organization’s name on it. Should a malpractice claim occur, your employer’s own interests may take priority. Their policy may cover employees if they are named in a lawsuit, but there are limitations. For instance, if multiple providers are named in the suit, you may have to share coverage limits—which may not provide you with sufficient protection to pay for the entire claim. There may also be differing opinions and views of an incident that could lead to a conflict of interest when multiple providers are named in a lawsuit.

The other important restriction of an employer’s policy is that it may not cover license complaints. In fact, your employer may be the one filing the complaint against you. You could be forced to pay for an attorney out of your own pocket. When you look at the average cost of hiring an attorney – which can be in the thousands – the cost for malpractice coverage may be  a worthwhile investment.
It’s easy! If you have a student policy through HPSO, you can transfer your student policy into a professional policy by calling HPSO at 1.800.955.7667. If you are purchasing coverage with HPSO for the first time, you can apply and get a quote in less than 5 minutes on our website.

As a new graduate, you are eligible for a discount on your annual premium of up to 60%! Apply within 12 months of graduation for the discount to be applied.
APTA members enjoy several exclusive benefits with individual professional liability insurance. Members receive a 10% discount on their premium and a waiver of the $9 purchasing group fee. With these advantages, members could save up to 29%.  Your policy also automatically includes coverage for consulting services in your area of expertise and fitness-related services, at no extra cost. Plus, you’ll have peace of mind with up to $30,000 in reimbursement for legal defense fees for representation in license board matters, with Licensure Defense Expenses coverage.
