NEW! Physical Therapist's Guide to Malpractice

Physical Therapists play a significant role in optimizing wellness. They examine patients, evaluate and diagnose movement dysfunction, present a prognosis, develop a plan of care and provide treatments and interventions. But in the event of patient injury or other adverse outcomes, physical therapists can become vulnerable to professional liability claims. This potential liability can create clinical, legal, financial and operational challenges for you whether you're in private practice, or employed by physicians, hospitals, long term care facilities, governmental agencies or other healthcare entities.

For that reason, HPSO, administrator of the APTA-Endorsed professional liability insurance program, has developed a comprehensive guide that will help you:

  • Enhance your understanding of the risks of malpractice within your field;
  • Learn how to protect yourself from malpractice; and,
  • Learn ways to reduce the legal and emotional costs you could experience if you are ever faced with being sued for malpractice.

The content and tests are available online, through our partner, Data Trace Publishing Company for only $35. Review the series and take the tests online.

A 10% premium discount can be applied for the contact hours received for taking and passing the HPSO risk management course, provided that the certificate of completion is presented to HPSO by mail at 159 East County Line Road, Hatboro, PA 19040 or by fax at 800-758-3635. The course must have been taken within last 12 months in order for discount to be applied. Full-time individual HPSO customers cannot combine this discount with any other discount. This includes discounts for part-time, new graduate, retired or leave of absence. These customers may still take the course for CE credit, but are not eligible for the 10% premium discount.

Provider Information

The Physical Therapist's Guide to Malpractice has been approved by the majority of Licensing authorities in the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy.* The Federation is committed to the development of a national framework that state licensing boards may use to assess continuing competence of physical therapy practitioners. As part of that commitment, FSBPT has developed "standards" that articulate a measurable degree of required performance. The standards chosen may be used to determine a level of performance to which licensees might be held accountable for ongoing practice.

* The Physical Therapist's Guide to Malpractice has been submitted to all state governing bodies, but is still pending approval in some states. Due to individual state approval guidelines, some states approved the Physical Therapist's Guide to Malpractice for fewer than 6 contact hours. However, since most other states have approved the program for 6 contact hours, you can still receive a 10% premium discount for taking and passing the HPSO risk management course. Please see the state approval list when you click on the above link to review and take the test.
