The decedent had a previous attempt at suicide before he was returned to jail for violating his probation. A nurse’s note indicated he had tried to overdose on heroin.

The defendant doctor working through a psychological service firm evaluated the decedent’s mental health and determined no further mental health intervention was needed. The decedent was placed in an isolation cell while awaiting the results of a TB test. The decedent hung himself from an air vent with his bed sheet.

The decedent’s family sued the firm and the defendant doctors for failing to properly evaluate and treat the decedent. According to the report, an $80,000 settlement was entered.
